Broker Is Larger Than Life

BROOKLINE, MA – March 14, 2007 - For years, David Bates looked for a means to let clients know the services he offered were different from other real estate brokers. It looks like Bates found that vehicle. Literally. A 14’ moving truck with a larger-than-life image of Bates on the side is causing a stir in Brookline. Bates’ promise is imprinted in large letters on the truck “Buy or Sell through me, Use this truck for Free!”

Bates has been a realtor in Brookline for more than 10 years, and is currently a principal at Prudential Unlimited Realty, a four office independently owned franchisee of Prudential Real Estate Affiliates. He received delivery of the truck at the beginning of March and in a very short time his image has been about as noticeable in Coolidge Corner as Boston’s famous CITGO sign is from Kenmore Square.

Bates has been experiencing a bit of local celebrity and has received a number of phone calls and emails from those who have passed the truck in the Pleasant Street lot where it is parked. He has been tapped on the shoulder in local coffee shops and asked if he is the guy on the truck, and recently someone who recognized his picture, who happened to be a long lost friend from high school, dropped by the Beacon Street office to discuss immediate real estate needs.

“The attention that this truck is bringing is really refreshing,” said David Bates. “It is not only working as an advertising medium, but also an ice breaker. I’ve had more conversations with folks who approach me just to talk about the truck, and we wind up talking about market conditions!”

Bates acknowledges the image is over-the-top and that when many of his peers such as a mortgage lender and real estate attorney that he has done transactions with saw it, they couldn’t stop laughing.

“The interesting thing is that though people find it amusing, the benefit the truck provides is no laughing matter” says Bates who paid more than $30,000 to purchase the truck. Bates notes that moving is one of the most stressful events in a person’s life and while realtors try in many ways to reduce the stress, the fact he has one more tool is a source of pride. He also offers use of the truck for free to local charitable organizations.

In becoming the exclusive marketing agent for condominiums at 55 Station Street, a newly constructed building in Brookline Village, the truck never came into play and he doubts the owner even knows he has the truck (he was named the listing agent before he received the truck). But if buyers or sellers are looking for a sign that Bates’ services are different than other real estate brokers, they may have just found one, and it’s 14 feet long!
